Writing Assignment: The Second Familty and The Other Parent

If you are teaching K-6, please read Steyer (The Other Parent). Those of you who are teaching beyond K-6, please read Taffel (The Second Family).

 

The author's contend the the mass media now functions as a surrogate parent AND a surrogate school for today's youth. American children and teens are exposed to more media than any generation in the history of the world.

 

In approximately four word-processed, double-spaced pages write a reflection that responds to the following three queries:

 

1. With specific reference to key statements from the chapter/s you read (use direct quotations), select five key ideas or arguments and respond to them making it clear whether you a. agree or b. disagree and WHY.

 

2. What are the implications for you as a teacher, or having to teach and reach students who spend so much time interacting with mass media?

 

3. In what ways does this expanding electronic environment and media landscape challenge our traditional and/or emerging concepts of literacy whether in the classroom, living room and or bedroom?
